

A CT scanner is a doughnut-shaped machine that rotates a low-dose X-ray beam around your body while you lie on a padded table.
A computer then combines hundreds of individual images into detailed 3D views, slice by slice.
Because CT captures images in seconds, it is especially valuable in emergencies, for lung and abdominal imaging, and for procedures that need fine anatomic detail.
Some CT exams use contrast dye, given by mouth, rectally, or through an IV, to make specific tissues, blood vessels, or the digestive tract more visible.
Your care team will tell you in advance whether your exam requires contrast and what to do to prepare.

You will lie comfortably on a padded table that moves slowly through a circular scanner. You may be asked to hold your breath for a few seconds and remain still while images are being captured.

Most CT scans take just a few minutes, though your visit may last 10 to 15 minutes to allow time for preparation, positioning, and any final instructions before or after the scan.
The scan itself is usually a few seconds to a few minutes. Total visit time is typically 30 to 60 minutes, longer if oral contrast is involved.
Yes. CT scans are quick, non-invasive, and use low levels of X-ray radiation. Modern technology has significantly reduced radiation exposure while improving image quality.
Yes. “CAT” is the older term (computed axial tomography); today most clinicians simply say CT.
